Flightseeing

Flightseeing emerged as a industry long after Bob Reeve began providing expedition support from the mud flats of Valdez to the first glacier landings  in 1932. With the advent of modern equipment it became feasible to carry passengers on the ride of a lifetime.

Sheldon Air Service offers the most authentic and intimate flightseeing experience available on Denali. Passengers are capable of carrying on a conversation and every seat is a window seat with a front-row view.  The Cessna 185 and DeHavilland Beaver have emerged as the authentic workhouse icons of air support on Denali.

There is nothing more real than a flightseeing trip with Sheldon Air Service. Choose from three flight profiles and add an optional glacier landing for the complete experience of glacier flying Denali.

L. LoweDon Sheldon's Mountain House

Mountain House Tour:

Our Mountain House Tour will take you high above the Tokositna Glacier towards Mt. McKinley for a fantastic photo opportunity few have experienced. Fly over the Don Sheldon Amphitheatre and view the Mountain House shelter hut that he built, nestled in the heart of Denali National Park.

We highly recommend the glacier landing at the base of the Mountain House where huge masses of snow, rock and ice create a dramatic perspective.

J. BondurantKahiltna Glacier Base Camp

Base Camp Tour:

View the Base Camp at Mt. McKinley’s 7200’ level where mountain climbers begin their trek to climb North America’s highest peak. Spot mountaineers as they are ascending the ridges and glaciers to reach the summit.

Fly in a vast new world as you gaze upon the panorama of snow, rock and ice that is Denali (the native Alaskan name for Mt. McKinley). Cruise across the south side of Mt. McKinley at 11,500’ above sea level and descend over the Ruth Glacier and through the Great Gorge where you will be awed by 5000’ rock walls and crevasses thousands of feet deep.

-  1 ¼ hour flight time

Denali Grand Tour:

If you want to see it all, and the weather permits, we highly recommend a flight all the way around Mt. McKinley. Among other sites, you will fly by the 14,000’ face of the Wickersham Wall, one of the largest snow, rock and ice walls in the world. See the East Face where few have ever ventured.

You can truly say that you have seen it all, if you decide to take this adventurous trip around one of the coldest, harshest mountains in the world.

-  1 ½ hour flight time

Flew with (Don) Sheldon Air Service to Denali with long time friend Jack. Landed on Ruth Glacier at 7000 ft. One of the lucky few to experience the mountain on a clear, sunny, and hot day!

"Great professionals"

This year we went to climb Mount McKinley and we choose Sheldon Air Service to approach the glacier.

From the first time not only did their job perfectly, but it helped us to do all things necessary before starting the tour, shopping, sleeping, dining, etc.

On our return, at the base camp [Sheldon] was the first [Air Service] that landed and took us back, we were hoping to land with cookies, beer and good food and let us place to organize, to dry our clothes, etc.

I do not know the other companies, but [I an sure you will not have such] a personal and friendly service.

"Coolest Outfit in TK"

Went to [Talkeetna] in June of 2011 en route to climb Denali. Had the privilege of using SAS for the drop-off on the Kahiltna Glacier, and the pickup after our climb.

The name Sheldon is famous in [Talkeetna], and for good reason. These folks are not only the nicest and most welcoming on the strip, they have decades of first class flying experience. Colby Coombs told us that David Lee is probably the best pilot in Talkeetna, and I had the opportunity to fly with David on the return trip back to the hangar.

If there is even the slightest weather window in which to fly, these guys will make it happen, and safely.

When we returned from our Denali climb, I was pretty dehydrated and down 20 lbs. Holly, knowing we would all be in sort of bad shape, had bottles of water waiting on us, and make me an awesome PB sandwich!!

For all the little reasons like that, I would never even consider going with another air service in Talkeenta.

It's SAS or nothin'. =)
